I’m probably in the minority finding this movie “OK” instead of at least some level of good or great. The CGI and effects were great. Gandalf is always cool. I didn’t mind seeing Orlando Bloom again. I even liked the female elf character they invented. Smaug looked cool, and who doesn’t like Benedict Cumberpatch. Most of the dwarf characters are good. I like the Holmes guy as Bilbo.

"We need to add 25 minutes to make this long enough to be a satnd-alone movie. How long can we stretch this gold thing out for?"

“We need to add 25 minutes to make this long enough to be a stand-alone movie. How long can we stretch this gold thing out for?”

What I didn’t like was how in an effort to turn 1 book into 3 movies they have added lots of unnecessary elements, and made the necessary elements unnecessarily long. Everything in this movie felt like it was dragged out an extra 50% to fill the time they had in mind. I mean, how long did that barrel thing need to be? And there was stuff they added to the story that I disliked. Elves and dwarfs in love? Lame.

In summary it is also cool to see Tolkien on the big screen, but this movie had too many lagging elements and too many changes to the book to be a winner for me.

Final Verdict: “OK”

DVD: Ehh. Check it out if you’re a Tolkien fan like I am.
